Long before the Conservative Resurgence, Dr. R.G. Lee was the Southern Baptist champion of biblical infallibility and inerrancy. In his sermon, “The Word of God – Not Broken and Not Bound,” first published in 1930, Dr. Lee proclaimed, “All who wrote [the Bible] are immortalized by their writing of this great Book, supernatural in origin, divine in authorship, human in penmanship, infallible in authority, infinite in scope, universal in interest, personal in application, regenerative in power, [and] inspired in totality.”
I ran across a sermon by R. G. Lee entitled “The Name Above Every Name”, and I feel that it is definitely worth posting here.
“Wherefore God hath also highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.” PHIL 2:9-10
“Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.” EPH 1:20-21
There never was another Who caused all creation to be ransacked to find similitudes and symbols to convey to human hearts and minds His glorious pre-eminence. There never was another Who was a human child and also a divine Son, Who was wounded by Satan and Who, at the same time crushed Satan; Who was appointed the Savior of men, yet was crucified by men; Who was judge of men, yet was led as a felon from one tribunal to another.
There never was another Who died and was buried and yet lived; Who saved others and Himself could not save; Who had no sin in Him, yet all sin on Him; Who, in the glory He had with God before the world was, had the angelic hails of heaven and yet, on earth, gave Himself to the murderous nails of men. There never was another Who was the Prince of life, yet died on Calvary- Death’s conqueror transfixed on a spear, Who was as old as His heavenly Father and ages older than His earthly mother. And there never was another Who had and has a name far above every name that is named not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.
1. We say with joy that His name is a pre-eminently inclusive name:
A huge library contains many different books on the same subject. A vast garden has many different flowers giving forth perfume. A great orchestra has many different instruments with various tones. And as there are many fruits in an orchard of various trees, so the name of Jesus is a melodiously inclusive name. Jesus, being the effulgence of God’s glory and express image of His person, the creator and upholder of all things, possessing a divinity not denied nor bestowed nor transmitted, He has a name which has and holds forever a beauty inimitable in variety, proportion, profession, profusion, perfection, power.
Great is the capacity of earth’s languages for expressing wonderful, manifold, diversified, and immeasurable truths and shades of feelings. But all the powers of all languages, written and spoken or sung, can do no more than hint at the greatness, the glory, the mystery of the inclusive, pre-eminent name of Him Who is the high and lofty God Who inhabiteth eternity, yet is pleased to dwell with him who is of an humble and a contrite heart.
2. His name possesses a glorious universality:
“His name shall be called Wonderful.”
He is Adam, Advocate, Anointed, Apostle, Author, Amen, Alpha, Ancient of days- born of woman.
He is the Beginning, the Begotten, Beloved, Bread, Branch, Bridegroom, Bright and Morning Star, Bishop of our souls, Brightness of the Father’s glory.

He is Stone, Shepherd, Son of God, Son of man, Shield, Servant, Seed of the woman, Surety, Sufferer, Savior, Sinless sacrifice, the same yesterday, today, and forever.
He is Teacher, Truth, Tabernacle, Testator, Tree of life, Treasure.
He is Witness, the Word, the Way, the Wisdom of God, Wonderful.
This is who we worship. We so often think that God fits in our pocket and that Christ’s work when completed on the cross, was the end of His reign. He is so much more than that! It is crucial to our worship and daily walk with Him that we truly realize who He is. Before we see His greatness, we must see our sinfulness and unworthiness. I am thankful that He will reveal His true nature and character to us as we study. May it humble us and excite us to know more!!!
