Introduction: From Chuck Missler’s study in REVELATION we have
these insights:
Chapter 6
concludes with the statement, “For the great day of His wrath is come; and who
shall be able to stand?” This next chapter seems to respond to that question.
In each of the
major series of “sevens”—the seals, trumpets, and bowls—we notice that there
always appears to be an inserted parenthetical passage between the 6th and 7th
of each series. Having completed 6 of the 7 seals, Chapter 7 pauses for some
amplification before we continue with the 7th seal in Chapter 8. Israel is the
centerpiece in the Old Testament; and it now re-emerges as the centerpiece of
God’s climax in Revelation. (It is also the centerpiece in the New Testament,
but there is a lot of misunderstanding just how.)
It is
interesting how Israel, again, is at the center of world events today. Chapter
7 deals with the “sealing” of the 144,000 Jews, 12,000 from each of the 12
tribes.
REVELATION
7:1-17
Basically then, this chapter
and others that insert these parenthetical events between the 6th
and 7th seals, trumpets and bowls are a kind of dramatic pause that
focuses attention on some things that the Holy Spirit deems worthy of His time
to reveal, and for us to study.
So, let’s find out what we
may, by the Spirit of GOD Who inspired the Scriptures, may we be granted
understanding by the same Spirit.
REVELATION
7:1-3
And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
We get the impression that everything
in all the Earth comes to a stand still – even these four winds are arrested as
something monumental is about to take place. The angelic quartet assigned to restrain
the winds that will bring harm to the Earth and sea must do so until the
servants of our GOD are sealed in their foreheads. Once this is accomplished,
we come to chapter Eight and the judgment of GOD continues onward until the
sixth and seventh trumpet (at the conclusion of chapter 9 and beginning in
chapter 10).
Four corners speak of the
cardinal directions over the Earth (north, south, east and west) and since all four
of these winds proceed from these directions, we can see that they are global
in their coverage – but what are these “four winds”?
Scriptures speak of them
throughout the Old Testament as well as the New” and they are associated with
Israel, GOD’s people, both in the persecution of the Jewish nation by the
world, and the gathering of these by the LORD Himself, Who will render His
judgment upon an unbelieving world by these same winds:
ISAIAH
11:12; JER 49:36; DAN
7:2; 8:8; 11:4; ZECH
2:6; MATT
24:31.
Divine
judgments. Wars, famine, pestilence, the overthrow of kingdoms, and the
universal wreck of all earthly things. The particular judgments to which these
winds refer are, I think, those mentioned in the sixth seal, at the close of
the sixth chapter, and whose fearful operations are represented by the seven
trumpets in the eighth chapter.
All events and influences unfavourable to the cause of Christ. The wind of persecution; the wind of false doctrine; the wind of delusion and wild fanaticism; the wind of temptation; the wind of infidelity; the wind of open profanity and blasphemy; the winds of affliction, adversity, and distress; by all of which the Church is frequently assailed. These things are called "winds," because they produce agitation and commotion — breaking the branches, blasting the fruits, and uprooting the trees of God's spiritual vineyard. They are called "four" winds, to show their universality, their wide-spreading desolation. They are called winds of the "earth," because earth is the scene of their operation — they are forever excluded from heaven; their coming from the four cardinal points at once shows their violence, rage, and fury (quoted from an article at the link above “four winds”).

Israel is often associated
with “the earth”, i.e. the land of Israel, whereas the nations in general are
seen as “the seas” which are most always “troubled, stirred, storming” (ISA 57:20; DAN 7:2-7). Both Earth and sea are mentioned in the first
verse, as well as trees (representative of people, (often times the righteous)
individually).
REVELATION
2:2-3
2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

We see now the reason for
this vast cessation of these winds: the sealing of these servants of GOD,
sealing them in their foreheads. This angel from the east approaches – and why
of all the cardinal directions, is it from the east that he comes – or is it an
arbitrary direction? Virtually nothing in the Scripture is arbitrary and
without significance!
It is from the east that the
sun rises, where the dawn breaks, and we receive from the LORD such blessings
as this – for He Himself is our Light in this dark night of the world (JOHN 9:4) where He is absent from direct rule – for now!
When Israel challenged the
enemies of GOD, they conquered them as far as “the plain on the east” (JOSH 12:3). The wise men who came bearing gifts for the new-born
King of Israel came from the east (MATT
2:2).
The Messiah King will
approach from the east and establish justice in the Earth (ISA 41:1-4) and render vengeance upon all who persecuted and
martyred His people (“Bozrah”, i.e. east of Israel; ISA 63:1-3). The LORD in comparing His
coming with lightning, states that it strikes “out of the east” – so shall His
coming be (MATT
24:27)”.
As for this seal, and its
significance: There are well over a dozen references in the New Testament
regarding various seals/sealings that GOD employs to accomplish His purposes.
What we see here in
Revelation, was also mentioned in EZEKIEL 9:
EZEKIEL 9:4-6
4 And the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. 5 And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: 6 Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.
Those so marked are
preserved while all the others are judged, such judgment being executed in the
city of Jerusalem; we see this MO of GOD in 2 PETER:
2 PETER 2:9
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: (See REV 3:10 in relation to GOD delivering the godly out of temptations and “keep[ing us] from the hour of temptation which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.”
For these 144,000, the LORD
keeps them (not from, but) in the midst of tribulation, whereas for the
church we are kept from* “the hour (“time”) of temptation. *(See also ROM 5:9; 1 THESS 5:9). Scripture states that while the majority of
Israel will perish during the time of the Tribulation (two-thirds according to ZECH 13:8-9), “the remnant” of the remaining third will be
brought “through the fire” and refined by it.
In each of the following New
Testament quotes, it’s the same Greek word employed:
“seal, sealed” sphragizō -
seal (22x), set to (one's) seal (1x), stop (1x), seal up (1x), set a seal (1x),
variations of 'seal' (1x); sfrag-id'-zo; from G4973; to stamp (with a signet or private mark) for security or preservation (literally or

a. for security: τί, Matthew 27:66; namely, τήν ἄβυσσον, to close it, lest Satan after being cast into it should come out; hence, the addition ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ, over him i.e. Satan, Revelation 20:3 (ἐν ᾧ —i. e. δώματι —κεραυνός ἐστιν ἐσφραγισμενος, Aeschylus Eum. 828; middle σφραγίζομαι τήν θύραν, Bel and the Dragon, Bel 1:14, Theod.).

Examples of how "seal/sealing" are used in the New Testament:
REVELATION 5:1
And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
REVELATION 5:1
And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
This seal is ordained of GOD
and no one can break these seals except for the One Who established them; thus,
Christ was worthy to break the seals, not only because He is GOD, but also
because by His blood He purchased this Earth and its souls.
JOHN
6:27
27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
Christ is the official representative
of GOD the Father, and so He has set His seal upon His only begotten Son; He is
wholly and entirely authorized (“authenticated”) because of this seal to speak
and act on behalf of the One Who sent Him to us!
2
CORINTHIANS 1:22
22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
EPHESIANS 1:13
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
EPHESIANS 4:30
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
This same seal is
incorporated in our personal salvation, as we are sealed with the Holy Spirit –
an unbreakable seal except for the One who established it – and He has stated
plainly:
HEBREWS 13:5
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Note from EPHESIANS 4, that this seal is good all the way up to “the day
of redemption”, speaking of our bodily redemption, being transformed into
glorified bodies (ROM
8:22-24).
Thus, for these reasons (among many others), I believe that our salvation is secure in Christ (“for security or preservation . . . destined for eternal salvation”), all who are genuinely born again of the Spirit – Who is “the earnest” (2 COR 1:22; a down payment made with the promise (EPH 1:13) to pay in full – and this full payment is realized once we receive our glorified bodies, having been, at this point, redeemed completely, body and soul just as our spirit/heart is indwelt and redeemed).
And also REVELATION 20:3
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
Here we see that GOD has
established a seal upon the bottomless pit, one that Satan for all of his power
and cunning cannot breach – he has absolutely no authority to do so, let alone not
sufficient sheer power to escape this prison.
This same seal that keeps him
imprisoned, unable to escape his abysmal cell is the same seal of the Spirit
that keeps our hearts in Christ – thus no born again saint can be indwelt by
any demonic spirit, for our hearts are already resided in by GOD Himself – and
He is unwilling to share His tenancy!
(NOTE: This seal upon our
hearts by no means protects even Christians who are dabbling with forbidden
things like Tarot Cards, horoscopes, seances or other forbidden practices (even
for “fun”) as described in Scripture. Christians can be spiritually oppressed
by the enemy and in some respects influenced mentally (from the soul level) by
demonic spirits!)
Getting back to REVELATION –
these servants of GOD are preserved, kept, guarded from the calamitous and
ruinous devastation that has been unleashed, and that which is soon to come
upon this Christ-rejecting world. The LORD God has heard the cry of the saints
in heaven at the breaking of Fifth seal, “How long will You not judge and
avenge our blood…?” and He is in the midst of answering their plea. But these,
the servants of GOD are safe guarded from these judgments.
REVELATION
7:4-6
4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. 5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. 6 Of the tribe of Asher were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand.

Of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand.
Some would allegorize this
entire passage, but allegories never have specifics in regards to names and
numbers and other information as we see here. There is a number of 144,000 of
these who are identified as Israel – not “spiritual Israel” as many would refer
to as the church of Jesus Christ. In Christ "there is neither Jew nor Gentile,
but a new man", Paul the apostle tells us in EPH
2:11-22 (see also GAL 3:27-29; COL 3:10-12).
This is specifically national Israel as we see
the twelve tribes represented – but how many tribes are there really? As we
look over those listed here – 12,000 from each tribe, we see names missing: Where
is Dan? And where is Ephraim? And how then do we still have twelve tribes?
We’ll be getting into that in a bit, but I find it interesting that these are
sealed by the Spirit of GOD and that there are 12,000 – not 11,000 or 13,000,
but 12,000 – it seems to reflect the twelve that the LORD selected as His
apostles who were commissioned to preach the Gospel and make disciples. Here we
have that, x 1,000!
I believe this drastic increase
of numbers is due to the fact that there is one last harvest of souls that the
LORD intends on bringing to repentance, but only 7 years or less to do so, the
globe over: and so, these greater numbers are employed.
Did you know that the Gospel
message was hidden but spelled out in GENESIS 5 from the Hebrew meanings of
this list of ten names, going from Adam to Noah? You can check this out here (I first learned of this from the late Chuck
Missler of khouse.org).
What if we take a look at the twelve names listed here in REVELATION 7? I’ve never looked into this before this study, so we’ll make this discovery together! These meanings are taken from the Hebrew, not the Greek. Note that the numbers after each name is from the Strong's Concordance and are hyper-linked,so you can go to the Blue Letter Bible on-line concordance and see these meanings for yourself.

Judah (3063) – "praised"; the son of Jacob by Leah.
Reuben (7205) – "behold a son"; the eldest son of Jacob by Leah.
Reuben (7205) – "behold a son"; the eldest son of Jacob by Leah.
Gad (1410) – Gad = "troop"; son of Jacob by Zilpah.
Asher (836) – Asher = "happy"; son of Jacob by Zilpah.
Nephthalim (Naphtali in OT; 5321) – Naphtali = "wrestling"; 6th son of Jacob and the second
by Bilhah.
Manasses (Manasseh; 4519) – Manasseh = "causing
to forget"; eldest son of
Joseph.
Simeon (8095) – Simeon or Shimeon = "heard"; the 2nd son of Jacob by his wife Leah and
progenitor of the tribe of Simeon.
Levi (3878) – Levi = "joined
to"; the 3rd son of Jacob by Leah and progenitor
of tribe of Levites.
Issachar (3485) – Issachar = "there
is recompense/one who is hired";
the 9th son of Jacob and the 5th by Leah his first wife.
Zabulon (Zebulun; 2074) – Zebulun = "exalted"; the 10th of the sons of Jacob, 6th and last
of Leah.

has added"; the eldest son of
Jacob by Rachel.
Benjamin (1144) – Benjamin = "son
of the right hand"; Jacob's
and Rachel's youngest son, Joseph's full brother.
I like how this gentleman interprets these meanings:
- Judah means “Now I will praise YHVH.” (Gen 29:35)
- Reuben means “Surely YHVH has looked upon my affliction.” (Gen 29:32)
- Gad means “What good fortune.” (Gen 30:11)
- Asher means “Happy am I.” (Gen 30:13)
- Naphtali means “With great wrestlings have I wrestled.” (Gen 30:8)
- Manasseh means “For Elohim [said he], ‘has made me forget all my toil.’” (Gen 41:51)
- Simeon means “Because YHVH has heard that I was hated.” (Gen 29:33)
- Levi means “Now this time will my husband be joined to me.” (Gen 29:34)
- Issachar means “Elohim has given me my wages.” (Gen 30:18)
- Zebulon means “Elohim has endowed me with a good gift, now my husband will dwell with me.” (Gen 30:20)
- Joseph means “YHVH shall add to me.” (Gen 30:24)
- Benjamin means “You shall have this son. (Gen 35:17–18)
“Combined, the names tell the following story: Now will I praise YHVH. Surely YHVH has looked upon my affliction. What good fortune. Happy am I. With great wrestlings have I wrestled and I have prevailed. For Elohim has made me forget all my toil because YHVH has heard that I was hated. Now this time will my husband be joined unto me. Elohim has given me my wages. Elohim has endowed me with a good gift. Now my husband will dwell with me. YHVH shall add to me. You shall have this son.“It starts with Yeshua and ends with him. He is the Aleph and the Tav (or the Alpha and Omega), the Beginning and the End, the Author and Finisher of our faith! Give him glory! Pause and reflect on these names. Is it possible that the mind of man could have cleverly contrived these names and their order about 1800 years before the birth of Yeshua?“Where are you in this prophetic scenario? In your spiritual walk have you passed through the reality of each of [these]?”
So now we come to the
question about why the tribes of Dan and Ephraim are not among these tribes.
Because of the fact that Jacob adopted Ephraim and Manasseh as his own, in
effect, there are actually fourteen tribes from which, in any listing through
Scripture, you can select twelve. Every time certain tribes are missing in any
line-up, there is a lesson to be learned.
And what lesson can we learn
here with the absence of Ephraim and Dan?
From the LAMB And LION ministries with Dr. David Reagan we have a competent answer,
which I believe is the correct one (read the full article here):
“In the listing in Revelation 7, the tribes of Dan and Ephraim are dropped and replaced by Levi and Joseph to keep the list at twelve. Why? Well, no one knows for sure. My guess is that Dan and Ephraim were dropped because they were the ones that led the children of Israel into idolatry (Deuteronomy 29:18-21 and 1 Kings 12:25ff). It thus appears that the two tribes responsible for luring others into idolatry will not be entrusted with sharing the Gospel with others during the Tribulation [And might I add, since the anti-Christ will erect his own image in the Holy of Holies in the soon-to-be-rebuilt Temple and demand the Jews to worship it, thus committing the sin of idolatry, Dan’s and Ephraim’s tribes were omitted in this line-up in the “end game” of this final age of mankind, when the LORD is extending yet another opportunity for salvation to this rebel planet.]“But God’s grace in this matter is reflected at the end of Revelation when the description of the new Jerusalem is given. Revelation 21:12 says the city will have twelve gates and that each gate will be named after one of “the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.” In Ezekiel 48:30-34 we are told which tribes will be included in this significant recognition. They are the original twelve, including Levi and Joseph. That means one of the gates will be named for the errant tribe of Dan, and both Manessah and Ephraim will be included under Joseph’s name.”
The LORD unleashes these
144,000 Spirit-empowered and sealed Super Soldiers of the Savior on a sinful
world and proclaim the Gospel in the midst of an anti-Christ atmosphere of
iniquity. No film has ever had such drama as this!

9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; 10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. 11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, 12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

Now we see the fruit of the
labors of these 144,000 saints – this great multitude so vast that no one will
be able to number them. These Jewish saints will traverse the entire globe and fearlessly
preach the Gospel of GOD and souls from every nation, kindred, people and tongues
who have rejected the rule of the Beast and his mark; but will rather profess faith in Christ. As a result
they will (most likely in the majority) be martyred for faith in the Messiah and the glorious Light of His salvation that He brings to them
all!
ISAIAH 49:5-10
5 And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength. 6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. 7 Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee. 8 Thus saith the Lord, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages; 9 That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places. 10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.
As we see in the scene here
described, the elders in heaven, the four living creatures and the angels are
worshiping and rejoicing in the LORD for this tremendous harvest of saved
souls. Indeed, all the angels of heaven rejoice when a sinner repents (LUKE 15:10) – can we imagine what it will be like in heaven when
this vast, innumerable multitude comes to salvation?! Wow, glory to You LORD!!
What causes me heart to leap
with the holy thrill of joyful anticipation is the truth of the church one day (soon!)
being transported from this sin-weary world under the curse of sin, under the
oppressive domination of Satan and into the glorious presence of our LORD,
where we shall witness these things first hand!
REVELATION
7:13-15
13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? 14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.
We are given insight by this
elder as to the identification of these redeemed – they are those who came “out
of great tribulation” – we know that this vast assembly is not the church,
because again, we are promised to be saved from this time of wrath – not so for
national Israel or the nations of the world. All who reject the Messiah, the
Lamb of GOD, will be confronted by the Lion of Judah and suffer insurmountable
affliction and chastening and judgment – but the mercies of GOD are evident
even during this time, and we are seeing the fruit of this mercy in this multitude.
These are not the church, for they will “serve Him day and night in His temple”
whereas we the church, the bride of Christ, will reign with Him, as was ably demonstrated
in the letter to the true saints in Thyatira (REV
2:24-27).
Nevertheless, as with the
church, so with these tribulation saints – all of them, along with the
righteous remnant of Israel – all are saved by having their robes washed in the
blood of the Lamb and made white (pure, sinless, justified).
REVELATION
7:16-17
16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. 17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. 17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
Because of the fact that no
one will be able to buy or sell without the mark of the Beast (REV 13:16-18), the righteous will suffer hunger and thirst and
most likely seek refuge in remote places without shelter, where they will grow
weary, being subjected to the elements like the beating sun, the winds and
rain, etc.
Yet here they are comforted by these words of promise: no more shall
they hunger, no longer will they thirst; they will no longer suffer want of any
kind and all the sorrow and anguish, torment and affliction that they
experienced during these last seven years of woe and trial will be wiped away
as certainly as the tears from their eyes. They shall be led to the fountains
of living waters and be fed, and ministered to by the Almighty and benevolent,
tender-hearted Abba Father Who sits upon the throne in their midst; bless His
Holy Name!
