"We see, in many a land, the proudest dynasties and tyrannies still crushing, with their mountain weight, every free motion of the Consciences and hearts of men. We see, on the other hand, the truest heroism for the right and the greatest devotion to the Truth in hearts that God has touched. We have a work to do, as great as our forefathers and, perhaps, far greater. The enemies of Truth are more numerous and subtle than ever and the needs of the Church are greater than at any preceding time. If we are not debtors to the present, then men were never debtors to their age and their time. Brethren, we are debtors to the hour in which we live. Oh, that we might stamp it with Truth and that God might help us to impress upon its wings some proof that it has not flown by neglected and unheeded." -- C.H. Spurgeon . . . "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:31, 32 . . . . .

KNOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE

A TTUF Book Review:

Recently I was looking through the many books overflowing my bookshelves, and pulled out a wonderful little book about 140 pages long entitled, “Know What You Believe.” The book was written by Paul E. Little, and originally published in 1970, by SP Publications, Inc. The writer and his wife, Marie, worked with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship for about twenty-five years. He was also an associate professor of evangelism at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, until his death in 1975. Little published several books during his life, Know What You Believe is just one of many that were based on his ministry to students on college campuses.

[Disclaimer: We are recommending the book only, not his associations with IVP or Trinity, though IVP has done a good thing by keeping the writings of Paul Little available for purchase today.]

The reason I am recommending this book is because of the way he provides a clear explanation of what Christians believe firmly grounded in scripture. The central biblical truths are explained in lucid simplicity. You don’t have to be a theologian to understand the book, it is intended for students, new and longtime believers, and even the non-Christian to understand the basic truths of the Christian faith.

This little book answers questions like:
  • What does the Bible teach about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit?
  • Why is Jesus’ death important?
  • What does the Bible teach about Man and Sin?
  • What is the relationship between salvation, repentance, faith, regeneration?
  • What is Election, Predestination and Foreknowledge?
  • What is the Church and what place should the Bible or a church have in my life?
  • What do angels, Satan, and demons have to do with reality?
This little book also covers the topics on heaven, hell and future events.

It really is a wonderful little book. In ten chapters, this book will help you understand the non-negotiable truths of the Christian faith that will prevent you from being “tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine.”  Knowing these truths will equip the believer to share their faith with non Christians.

I can’t express how very important it is, especially in this day and age, for Christians to know what they believe, and why they believe it. The Bible Alone provides answers to our ultimate questions about what is life all about, and what will happen when we die? It is also important because we need a clear and correct definition of the Christian Faith in order to share it with others. Many Christian beliefs have been challenged and believers are commanded to defend the Christian Faith, the only way to defend it is to Know What You Believe.

This book is still available for purchase in new or used condition. I highly recommend it to everyone.
